about
based in germany, cologne.
with artists.
the work is already finished.
it has weight. it has a temperature. it took time and transformed it into something new.
and still it has no room that can hold it the way the room it was made in held it.
what exists instead is a set of borrowed shapes.
a theme with a slot for a name.
a grid that thinks every picture wants the same hole.
a feed that will take the piece if you let it crop the edges, stamp a time on it, and decide who walks past, and for how long.
those places were built for a product, or for a person performing a product.
they were not built for the work.
so the work is already online.
it had to go somewhere.
what you see there is a shadow of the piece.
that is the whole problem.
not that artists need a website.
that there was no space online that could carry the same identity the piece already has, the same emotion, the same silence or the same noise, without first asking the work to become something more convenient.
a site that understands the art would not decorate it.
it would take its orders from it.
if the work is slow, the pages are slow.
if the work cuts, the site cuts.
if the work is quiet, nothing on the site talks over it.
a stranger could feel who made it without a caption, because the room would be made of the same decisions as the piece.
that kind of room has to start empty.
a canvas.
no look waiting in it.
no house style sitting in the chair before the artist arrives.
imagination has to be able to become the walls, the type, the pace, the dark, the bright, the thing you are not supposed to put on a website.
any way the work needs to be seen.
most of the internet is the opposite of that.
it sells a finished room and lets you hang two pictures.
it calls that freedom because you chose the color of the header.
the work knows the difference.
the work will not breathe in a room that was designed for someone else.
latent exists because that gap was the whole landscape.
because a finished piece with no true space is still latent: the image is already in the silver, and nobody has made the print.
we exist to make a space that is the work.
empty on purpose.
allowed to be whatever the piece is.
a site that lives at the same temperature as the art, and does not ask the art to cool down so it can fit.
not a look you move into.
a room the work invents.
